WELCOME MESSAGE
A message from the Board:
Members and volunteers of HHI are the key to our success in continuing efforts to revitalize historic Hertford. The beautification of the downtown area benefits all residents of Hertford and Perquimans County.
HHI projects include the flower planters and flags that beautify Church Street and on a sunny NC day we can all enjoy are relaxing moment on the benches and appreciate the trash receptacles that keep us clean and green. Matching grants from HHI encourage enhancement of store facades. In the past, side by side with town officials, HHI provided funds to install historic street lamps and brick sidewalk aprons, the plaza at Church and Market Street, and the changed zoning to increase the downtown business district. These, as well as many other enhancements, could not have been accomplished without the support of HHI. Future plans include our partnering with the town as it develops the waterfront for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.
This year’s Main Street Champion is Susan Cox. Susan is a dynamic Civic Leader that has brought her business savvy to the Main Street program. She has successfully accepted every challenge given her. For the past two years Susan has managed the Entertainment for our Indian Summer Festival with great success. Susan is a retired educator who owns an awards and recognition business in downtown Hertford. She is active in the community serving on the Perquimans County School Board, President of the Perquimans County Schools Foundation, President of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce and on the Board of Historic Hertford, Inc. During the last two years, Susan has worked with the downtown merchants to form the Hertford Business Association. The association has conducted campaigns such as "Spring into Hertford" and the Giant Christmas Stocking in an effort to attract visitors. With a great deal of help from Historic Hertford, Inc., the merchants, led by Susan, helped fund a billboard on Highway 17, advertising Hertford's Downtown Attractions. Susan spearheaded a brochure that was developed and published exclusively for the promotion of downtown Hertford. This brochure has been distributed to many of the out of town visitor centers in an effort to get the word out about the Downtown Businesses.
Your annual membership and support of our events are key to enabling us to continue this important work. Our 2012 events are outlined on the Events page and we look forward to your participation!
